Sowing Depth

The recommended sowing depth is 1 to 11⁄2 inches (2.5 to 4 cm) for wheat and triticale and 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) for barley and oat. If small grains are sown deeper than 2 inches, germination is delayed, emergence is impeded, and stands may be reduced. The sheath that surrounds and protects the embryonic plant as it emerges from the seed (the coleoptile) is only about 2 to 21⁄2 (5 to 6.5 cm) inches long, and it can be buried at deep seedings.
